Design with purpose
The Ford Atlas Concept is inspired by decades of listening to customers at the places they work and play. The result is a purpose-driven design with prominent wheel arches, a wide stance and chiseled grille - all to reinforce its functional Built Ford Tough® image.
"We wanted the concept to reflect how Ford trucks help customers in both their worlds - professionally and personally," said J Mays, Ford group vice president and chief creative officer. "Every surface and feature in the vehicle has been crafted for purpose and capability while retaining an unmistakable Built Ford Tough look."
Designers enhanced truck functionality, while creating new advanced features(see infographic here). For example, multiple tie-down points are integrated within the cargo box walls and load floor, along with 110-volt electrical outlets in the cargo box to charge power tools. An integrated roof carrying system and hidden extendable ramps give the truck unique functionality for a variety of jobs.
The interior is themed with structural styling cues and features the latest thinking in comfort, utility and refinement. Innovative, thin, lightweight seating in comfortable leather allows for extra legroom for rear passengers - along with integrated storage for smaller items. "Floating" instrument pods and glove-friendly buttons and controls keep the interior functional and ruggedly stylish.
Leading fuel efficiency
The Ford Atlas Concept features a next-generation EcoBoost® powertrain, which introduces truck-enhanced Auto Start-Stop engine shutoff technology. Auto Start-Stop shuts off the engine when stopped in traffic to save fuel - and smartly suspends the feature when the truck knows it is towing.
EcoBoost engines use gasoline direct injection and turbocharging to deliver fuel-economy gains of up to 20 percent and reduction of CO2 emissions of up to 15 percent, compared with larger-displacement engines. More than 500,000 EcoBoost engines have been sold globally, including 250,000 in the Ford F-150.
The Ford Atlas Concept goes further to save fuel through a combination of active aerodynamic elements that reduce wind resistance. They include:
- Active Grille Shutters: Automatic shutters behind the grille stay open when extra engine cooling is needed, such as during low-speed stop-and-go driving or while working in hot weather. The shutters automatically close to improve aerodynamics when cruising on the highway at steady speeds
- Active Wheel Shutters: Automatic shutters in the wheels are hidden to improve style at rest and low speeds, but automatically close at highway speeds to improve aerodynamics. Self-charging batteries use energy from the wheels motion to power the shutters
- Drop-Down Front Air Dam: A drop-down front wind spoiler lowers at highway speeds to improve underbody airflow. The air dam is raised at low speeds to improve ground clearance - helpful for off-roading
- Power Running Boards: Auto-deploying running boards help passengers enter the truck at rest and tuck up against the truck when it is moving to improve aerodynamics and ground clearance
The combination of these fuel-saving features saves more than 2 mpg on the highway without diminishing towing or hauling capability.
Work and play smarter, not harder
Ford Atlas Concept is a rolling showcase of features that improve capability, durability and productivity to meet the diverse needs of pickup truck owners. Features include:
- Dual-Purpose Tailgate Step and Cargo Cradle: The acclaimed Ford Tailgate Step goes a step further by adding the ability to also act as a cargo cradle - lifting and holding extra-long cargo items above the truck and freeing valuable bed spaceTrailer Backup Assist: This segment-first innovation allows drivers to back a trailer with the twist of a knob. Ford research shows that backing a trailer is often the most intimidating task a truck customer can face
- Dynamic Hitch Assist: Hitching a trailer can be time consuming and difficult. Dynamic Hitch Assist helps precisely line up the trucks hitch with the trailer coupling, eliminating maneuvering guesswork by showing visual cues in the trucks center display screen
- 360-Degree Point-of-View Camera: A Ford truck first, the system gives a birds-eye view of the truck to help position the vehicle in tight places or when there are obstacles near the truck - such as on a busy job site or grocery store parking lot
- LED Headlamps and Taillamps: Advanced LED lighting offers better road illumination than conventional halogen or HID lights and lasts longer. LED lamps also offer near-instant response, giving valuable extra warning time for following traffic
- LED Cargo Box and Side Mirror Lighting: Advanced, powerful yet efficient LED lighting brightly lights the cargo box and job site after the sun goes down with minimal battery drain compared to standard headlights or plug-in lights
- Hidden Cargo Ramps: Lightweight, durable loading ramps stowed below the cargo box can be quickly removed and set up to assist with loading wheeled items into the bed - from landscaping equipment to dirt bikes

2011 Ford F 150 Pickup Trucks
![]() |
| Ford F150 |
The Ford F150 series of pickup trucks are half-ton trucks. Ford offers the 2011 F150 with a choice of four power plants: a 3.7-Liter Four Valve TI-VCT V6, a 5.0- Liter four-valve dual overhead camshaft TI-VCT V8, a 6.2-Liter Two-Valve Single Overhead Camshaft V8 and their all new 3.5-Liter TI-VCT Ecoboost V-6.We were really impressed with such economy on a four-wheel drive equipped truck.
New clusters include the available 4.2-inch LCD message center screen’s menu options display, which features information related to fuel economy, towing performance and off-roading. Two technology stalwarts of Ford trucks are available again for 2011 – SYNC and Ford Work Solutions. Ford works hard to continually improve the safety of their workhorse vehicles. New for the 2011 Ford F-150 are a seat-integrated shoulder belt for the front middle seat, a head restraint for the second-row middle seat and integrated spotter mirrors. Joining the XLT lineup is the new XLT Custom package tailored for customers who opt for the 3.7-liter V6. Available in all cabs in two-wheel-drive configuration, the XLT Custom exterior includes 18-inch machined aluminum wheels, chrome exhaust tip, body-color 4-inch running boards, body-color front and rear bumper fascias, unique grille with body-color surround and chrome billet insert.
The 2011 Ford F-150 Pickup Trucks. Beyond the new engines, reviewers have only positive things to say about the 2011 Ford F-150. --The Silverado is available in a fuel-efficient Hybrid model and regular Silverado trucks start out $1,565 cheaper than the base F-150.
The 2011 Ford F-150 is available in 11 different trims, not including the different cab configurations (regular, extended or crew), bed lengths (5.5 feet, 6.5 feet, or 8 feet), or engine choices (two V6’s and two V8’s).
A base 3.7-liter V6 produces 302-horsepower and a 5.0-liter V8 with 360-horsepower are the two bottom rung engines. Surprisingly positioned above the 5.0-liter V8, Ford is introducing a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter Ecoboost V6 with 365 horsepower.
2011 is certainly not an uneventful model year for the Ford F-150 pickup lineup—it marks the most extensive overhaul of the big pickups powertrain in almost 62 years of production.
The fourth option: Fords 3.5-liter, twin-turbo Ecoboost V-6, an unlikely but completely common-sense alternative to V-8 thirst and thin V-6 torque. Once upon a time, a Ford with a turbo V-6 would have been laughed out of any serious truck owners stall; but thanks to modern electronic engine controls and some innovation on the engineering side at Ford, thats all changed. Fords 3.5-liter Ecoboost V-6 feels just as stout as a V-8 and is just as formidable for towing and hauling, while sipping regular unleaded at V-6 rates.
In entry-level spec, a Ford F-150 with this engine gets 302 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque to work with. Base V-6 models can tow up to 6,100 pounds, and the 5.0-liter models will tow close to 10,000 pounds.
Ford made some significant packaging improvements with the last redesign; the floor of the rear seating area is now completely flat, and when the rear seats fold up (they nest effortlessly into a compact package against the rear cab wall), a huge parcel can be accommodated behind the front seats.
In any of its trims, the 2010 Ford F-150 now offers a complete safety package, front side airbags, full-length side-curtain bags, anti-lock brakes, and stability control all standard. Premium Sony sound systems are available, as are SNYC (Fords voice-activated media and phone interface) and Sirius Travel Link (that provides navigation plus real-time traffic, weather, and fuel prices among other features).
